In recent years there has been a rise in the belief of postmillennialism, which teaches that the world will large get better and be either fully or mostly Christianized before Christ’s return. The doctrine was once common in the Protestant Church, held by the likes of Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, Charles Finney and the puritans. In the late 19th and early 20th century it fell out of popularity and into near extinction before making its recent comeback. Premillennialism remains the overwhelmingly dominant position of evangelical Churches, which essentially believes the world will get worse as evil waxes greater and greater, until a final tribulation, and return of Christ. This position was common among many in the early Church, but fell into a minority position until it rose back to dominance in the late 19th century, supplanting other eschatological positions.
